Who Frank Lampard will pick to be Chelsea's striker against Man United after Alvaro Morata exit

Alvaro Morata was always set to spend the 2019/20 campaign on loan with Atletico Madrid, however his deal is now going to be a permanent move away.

The 25-year-old never fully settled at Stamford Bridge during his 18 months in west London, before spending the last half of the 2018/19 campaign on loan at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Morata was always keen on making the move a permanent one and he got his wish with the striker set to stay in La Liga.

Frank Lampard would have been preparing for life without Morata to be the new number nine and there are three main contenders to take the role.

It is likely to be a three-way battle between Olivier Giroud, Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi,

"I believe in myself and there is no better guy to play under as well," said Abraham, speaking after England exited the European U21 Championships.

"Someone you have grown up watching, who has been at Chelsea for ever. He knows about me as well. I played against his team in the play-off final. I am pretty sure he knows all about me."

"And Jody as well. I have obviously been coached by Jody in the younger age groups. So it is all positive, it is all positive."

What is Frank Lampard looking for?

For those Chelsea fans who saw Derby County play at Stamford Bridge then they would have noticed a high press situation, where obviously the striker was a big part of that.

But in the attacking situation, it is all about the speed of the play and when they are on the break then Derby liked to hit the opposition defence with pace.

When Jack Marriott was the front man then it was key for his runs to be down the flanks to create more space for those behind him to create triangles and move quickly through the midfield.

The pace of the striker is key in the attacking system, while the main striker must get into the right positions in the box to finish the chances that come to them.

Tammy Abraham

The idea of a player making the unselfish runs around the back of the defence and using his pace is something that should have Abraham's name on it.

Scoring 26 Championship goals mean that Abraham is going to be full of confidence when he comes back to Stamford Bridge, while he bagged another in the U21 Euros.

From his quotes, it is obvious that he is excited about Lampard coming in as the Chelsea boss as he believes that he has the chance to shine as the main number 9.

With the way that Lampard likes to play, Abraham certainly has the ability to do it and will be given the chance.

Michy Batshuayi

The Belgian has struggled to settle in at Stamford Bridge. He was always number two to Costa, while Antonio Conte preferred Morata and he had three loan spells.

He enjoyed his stint at Borussia Dortmund, but struggled massively with Valencia and then had some success with Roy Hodgson's Crystal Palace.

Batshuayi's strength is his goalscoring ability, there is no doubt, with the Belgian's finishing at times excellent but his overall play frustrating in the main.

That might be where Batshuayi's time at the Blues will struggle once again, with his all round play letting him down and a work effort that might not be to Lampard's standards.

Olivier Giroud

Giroud might not be the most typical striker that Lampard is looking for when it comes to his main man, however there is still something crucial about the France World Cup winner.

One of the main reasons that Giroud has so much success is his superb link-up play, and he remains one of the best at it in the Premier League.

With Eden Hazard in the side, Giroud linked up brilliantly with him, while also scoring some important goals himself, including 11 in the Europa League.

The Blues nailed down Giroud to a new one-year deal and he will be vital once again to bring something different if needed.

The experience will be key as well. Abraham and Batshuayi are going to need support and guidance, while Giroud is eager to be the main striker.

The other options

Of course those three strikers are the main contenders, but there will be a few that can try to find their way into the squad.

The Blues are currently in Ireland on the first bit of their pre-season, with striker Ike Ugbo being one of the strikers out there.

Kasey Palmer has also gone out with the rest of the team as well, with Lucas Piazon also having returned from his loan spell also.
