Above average temperatures predicted this autumn - Met Office long-range forecast

We could be in for a particularly balmy autumn according to forecasters, who are predicting above average temperatures across the next three months.

The Met Office has released their quarterly three-month prediction, for the whole of the UK, which is based on "information from observations, several numerical prediction systems and expert judgement."

And the main take from their findings, once you wade through some meteorological jargon, is we can expect a hotter than average three months, in the lead up to Christmas time.

Their report says: "For September-October-November as a whole, above-average temperatures are more likely than below-average temperatures.

A warm autumn would be welcome after a particularly underwhelming summer (Media Scotland)

"Overall, the probability that the UK-average temperature for September-October-November will fall into the coldest of our five categories is around 5% and the probability that it will fall into the warmest of our five categories is around 60% (the 1981-2010 probability for each of these categories is 20%)."

And, in part, the hotter weather could be due to a "greater-than-usual incidence of warm southerly or south-westerly winds across the UK."

Unfortunately, the report is unable to provide an indication on whether we're likely to see more rain or sunshine in the next three months, so we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed on that one.
