'About 20 caravans' spotted on Bristol playing field as travellers return

A group of travellers have set up camp at a Bristol playing field.

An eyewitness told Bristol Live that there were "about 20" caravans at Wellington Hill playing field in Horfield, which appear to have moved in today (Friday, July 31).

They are parked just behind houses in Woodhouse Grove, spaced out along a row of hedges and trees.

Friends of Horfield Common have posted about the group on Facebook, reporting that they have been served with a trespass notice.

Posting on the public group today, one of the group's administrators Samantha Thomson said: "Friends of Horfield Common are aware that travellers have now moved on to Wellington Hill Playing Field from the common near to the Ardagh play area.

"Police and Bristol City Council are also aware.

"This happens every year at this time (to the exact same week) so is not a new thing nor a surprise to anyone."

In a further update this afternoon, she added: "The traveller officer has visited them this morning to do a welfare assessment and serve them with a trespass notice.

"Once he has written these up BCC (Bristol City Council) will apply to legal for an eviction notice.

"[The officer] did say that they were very pleasant and will be moving off the site in the next couple of days; something which they promised and did last year. However, we will still pursue the legal route.

"BCC are aware that they are now located in Wellington Hill Playing Field."

A police spokesperson said: "We’re aware of the issue and officers have attended today."

The city council also confirmed that it is aware of the group.

A smaller group of travellers were seen on the same field in early July last year, and were also ordered to leave.

Earlier this week, an encampment pitched up in a B&M car park in Clevedon.
