In light of an active sandanme wrestler dying from COVID-19 in May, about 1,000 sumo wrestlers and stable masters attended a seminar on coronavirus prevention that was held by the Japan Sumo Association on Sunday.
Two weeks before Day 1 of the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament, professor Hiroshi Yotsuyanagi and assistant professor Michiko Koga from the Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo, gave lectures at the seminar. According to the association, measures to prevent infection in the communal living environments of sumo stables were introduced, as well as explanations on how people with obesity or diabetes tend to end up in a serious condition.
The participants, including wives of stable masters, sat apart from each other to maintain social distance.
