Abou Diaby, Sylvain Distin, Glen Johnson and Jonás Gutiérrez are among the high-profile names who have been included on Premier League clubs’ released players list.
The 20 clubs – as of the 2014-15 season – are required to submit their retained and released lists to the Premier League by the third Saturday in May. They are not definite given some of the named players are likely to be offered fresh contracts with their current employers having seen their existing deals end. But in many cases, it is a case of thank you and goodbye .
That is certainly the case for Diaby, who made only 124 appearances for Arsenal having signed from Auxerre in 2006 because of persistent and serious injury problems.
Everton have confirmed Distin, who joined them in 2009, is definitely leaving the club, alongside Antolín Alcaraz, while Johnson is on his way out of Liverpool having also arrived on Merseyside in 2009. He is joined at the Anfield exit door by the Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones.
Gutiérrez’s departure from Newcastle was confirmed at the end of last month, and it was later revealed that the 31-year-old found out that he was no longer wanted at St James’ Park via a second-hand phone call.
Ron Vlaar and Wes Brown are also on the released players’ list but are among those who are likely to be offered new contracts by their current clubs.
