The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry has announced that a woman in her 20s suffered heavy bleeding and other health problems after taking Indian-made oral pills to induce an abortion.
The woman -- who bought the pills online from overseas -- has recovered, but the ministry on Monday moved to restrict private imports of Indian-made abortion pills without a doctor's prescription. The pills contain medications such as mifepristone and misoprostol. The ministry is urging people not to take them without consulting a doctor.
According to the ministry, the woman took a total of seven abortion pills of two types that were made in India. She developed such symptoms as heavy bleeding, convulsions and a stomachache.
In 2004, the ministry banned private purchases of abortion drugs from the United States, China and other countries without a doctor's prescription. However, the measure did not include Indian products.
