Aboriginal flags to be flown permanently at historic Launceston buildings within months

The vote was unanimous. (ABC: Mitchell Woolnough)

The Aboriginal flag will be permanently flown at Launceston's Town Hall and Albert Hall after the council passed a new flags policy.

The flag is already on display at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and at Home Point on the banks of the kanamaluka/Tamar Estuary.

Mayor Albert van Zetten said it was time the Aboriginal flag has a more prominent presence in the city.

"That's come with consultation with the Aboriginal community and the wishes of those people that would love to see the flag there — it's something that we're happy and very keen to support," he said.

"It's been a discussion over quite a number of years … and we've got councillors now that have been very proactive in wanting to see that."

Council will now need to lodge planning applications which would allow additional flagpoles to be built on the roofs of both buildings.

Aboriginal community backs the move

Lisa Coulson, the northern regional manager of the Tasmania Aboriginal Centre, said the council's decision to raise the flags permanently at the two halls was an important one.

"I think it's definitely overdue … but looking at the possibilities of truth and educating our broader community as well as building the relationships with the Aboriginal community are where we need to be focused," she said.

Late last year, the Clarence City Council in Hobart's east was heavily criticised after voting against permanently raising the Aboriginal flag.

The council later reversed its decision.

Mr van Zetten said it was pleasing the City of Launceston passed the decision unanimously.

"It's great to see that everybody supports it, but it's also important that we have discussed it together and worked through it together, and I think that's why it was unanimous."
