Abolish the monarchy billboard pops up in Leeds as group demands brand new system

A billboard has popped up in Leeds calling for the monarchy to be abolished.

The signboard in Low Road, Hunslet, appeared last week on July 26, as part of campaign group Republic's bid to replace the royal role with an elected head of state.

It reads: “Secretive, divisive, undemocratic.

“Abolish the monarchy.”

Leeds is one of 12 cities where the signs have appeared in the past week, according to Republic's crowdfunded page, billboards have also been placed in Manchester, Glasgow, and Portsmouth.

The group says now is the ideal time for the people to have more say in who is our head of state.

In a statement published on their crowdfunding page, they say "as the Queen’s reign draws to an end, it is time to demand a say in who should be our head of state."

The full statement reads: “Republic is the UK’s only pressure group campaigning for the monarchy to be abolished and replaced with a directly elected head of state. We have challenged common myths like the one about royals and tourism. We have exposed royal abuse of public money and highlighted the huge £345m a year cost to the taxpayer. And we have presented a positive, democratic alternative. A parliamentary republic with an elected head of state.

"We have been campaigning for the abolition of the monarchy for a long time but now we are at a crossroads. As the Queen’s reign draws to an end, it is time to demand a say in who should be our head of state.”
