Ablett tells Suns he wants AFL trade back to Geelong

The Gold Coast Suns have confirmed Gary Ablett has requested to be traded back to Geelong during next month's trade week.

In a statement, Suns chief executive Mark Evans said Ablett, 33, will be traded if favourable conditions are reached between Gold Coast and the Cats.

"Gary Ablett today informed the club of his desire to be traded to Geelong during next month's exchange period," Evans said.

"We indicated to Gary and his manager, Liam Pickering, that there are conditions that will need to be met for the Gold Coast if this is to be achieved.

"[Recruitment manager] Scott Clayton will be available to meet with Liam and Geelong to ensure these conditions are met."

The Cats have said they will not comment until the beginning of the trade period.

"The club is respectful of the fact Ablett is a contracted player with the Gold Coast and as such, the Suns have the final say on a trade agreement," Geelong said in a statement.

Ablett was the Suns' marquee man in the club's inaugural season in 2011, signing from Geelong in a mega-money move after featuring 192 times for the Cats.

His time at the Suns has been dogged by speculation he would eventually return to Geelong.

Ablett has endured an injury-hit spell over the last three seasons, playing just 34 games in that time.

He played just 14 matches in 2017, but was still awarded the Suns' club champion prize.
