Abhilash Tomy to finish his dream race today

KOCHI: Retired naval aviator and Keralite sailor Abhilash Tomy will finish the solo 30000 nautical mile Golden Globe Race today. At 10pm on Friday, Tomy was around 60 nautical miles from the finishing point Les Sables-d'Olonne (LSO), France and he is expected to reach there by Saturday afternoon on his yacht Bayanat to secure the second position. South African woman sailor Kirsten Neuschäfer already finished first in the race on Friday morning.

Though Tomy was expected to arrive on Friday night, light winds and fog delayed his sail. The 44-year-old Dornier pilot, will become the first Indian and first Asian to complete GGR, which is the longest and slowest race on the planet.

Tomy has been sailing for around 235 days continuously after he set sail from LSO on September 4, 2022, with 16 participants. Besides Tomy, there is only one person in the fray and he is expected to reach LSO by May 15.
