Aberystwyth University suspends face-to-face teaching

Aberystwyth University has taken the decision to suspend in-person teaching temporarily.

They took the decision following discussions with local partners on Sunday regarding the escalating risk of Covid-19 transmission.

This temporary suspension of in-person teaching came into effect today.

There are around 8,500 university students in the Ceredigion town.

Coronavirus cases for Ceredigion have remained the lowest in Wales over the past week.

A spokesperson for the University said: “This has been a difficult call which is partly driven by uncertainty surrounding the scale of spread within our community.

"This weekend we have had the first confirmed cases in the community connected with the University.

“We will be making further assessments of how to proceed with our plans to teach in person as further information is available to us.

“We have also made clear to students that they should continue to:

  • Maintain 2m social distancing at all times – even within student accommodation for the time being.
  • Use a face covering when in buildings – even in communal areas of student accommodation for the time being.
  • Wash their hands regularly.
  • Know who they are with – contact tracing saves lives.”

“In the meantime, we will continue to monitor the situation and act accordingly in close collaboration with local, regional and national agencies.”
