Aberystwyth promenade covered in debris as it suffers worst storm damage in years

Storm Barra has caused substantial damage to Aberystwyth promenade covering it in debris and creating holes in the sea wall.

Wind gusts as high as 86mph hit Wales on Tuesday as the storm raged in from Ireland.

Pictures from Aberystwyth show the damage that was caused to the seaside town's famous prom.

Police had warned the public to avoid the area at the height of the storm, and local residents reported spray being flung higher than a four-storey building.

The bandstand, which was built in 2016 to replace the old bandstand, was severely damaged with the council coming out overnight to monitor the situation.

A statement from Ceredigion Council at lunchtime on Wednesday said most of the repair work would not start until Thursday.

A spokesman said: "We are aware of flood damage to the prom in Aberystwyth and at Borth/Ynyslas, and that overtopping also occurred in Aberaeron, and that a number of fallen trees were attended to. We are not aware of any significant flooding impacts.

"Officers are out today assessing the damage, but we won’t be able to undertake much clearance/repair work until tomorrow due to ongoing high tides and weather warnings."

A yellow weather warning for wind remains in place for coastal parts of Wales until 6pm on Wednesday.

It says: "Strong westerly winds slowly moderating through Wednesday. Wind gusts of 45-50 mph expected widely across the region, with a potential of 55-65 mph for exposed coastal locations.

"In addition to strong winds, there is a potential for large waves along windward coasts."

Porthcawl Harbour also saw "significant damage" following the storm, with scaffolding falling towards the sea.

The pier has been off-limits to the public recently during repairs, however, the storm has caused a large section of the scaffolding to collapse.
