Aberdeen were X-rated but players not Derek McInnes should be in firing line - Back Page Football Show

Powderpuff. Pitiful. Pathetic.

Just three of the printable words summarising Aberdeen 's Pittodrie pumping by Celtic which has piled the pressure back on Derek McInnes .

The Dons were 4-0 down at the break and facing further embarrassment before finally steadying the ship after the break. Or could it just have been Celtic taking their foot off the gas?

But for all that the champions were outstanding, and they were, Aberdeen were woeful as they went another home game without victory. That's just four league wins at Pittodrie from 12 games in the calendar year - the third poorest percentage in the league and worse than St Johnstone, St Mirren, Hamilton and Livingston.

On the back of the 5-0 trouncing at Ibrox just a month ago the results have understandably thrown huge question marks over the Dons gaffer.

But should McInnes' job be at risk? With a squad only just recovering from an injury crisis the Dons are still sitting fifth just two points off third. His record of four second place finishes in six seasons stands up to scrutiny and of course he ended a 19 year wait for silverware when he led them to the League Cup five years ago.

The current situation at Aberdeen is dissected in the this week's Back Page Football Show on which Record Sport 's Liam Bryce and Fraser Wilson look back at an action packed weekend and forward to another full card on Wednesday night.

Fraser said: "Celtic were excellent but Aberdeen were just X-rated. It was a woeful performance.

"A year ago on this date they were beating Rangers 1-0 in the League Cup semi final with a performance full of energy, heart and old fashioned desire. Everything that the display against Celtic lacked.

"It's no wonder the Red Army are seething. But I put this one at the door of the players. They stood off Celtic and looked scared. McInnes wouldn't tell his team to sit off Celtic and let them play but for some reason that's what happened.

"He went with the same starting XI that did so well in the 3-0 win against Motherwell a week beforehand and who could blame him - that was Aberdeen's best performance of the season.

"But it never worked this time. Yes there were six defenders in the starting line-up but the two holding midfielders - Zak Vyner and Greg Leigh are full-backs who are used to getting forward and playing with the ball at their feet.

"Expect big changes for what is a massive match against Hamilton on Wednesday. I'd expect Craig Bryson to come back in and there's a player who needs to start having an impact. Lewis Ferguson and Ryan Hedges I could imagine will be back in too."

Also up for discussion is Rangers' performance against Motherwell, James Tavernier's loss of form and confidence, and another winless weekend for the struggling Edinburgh clubs as Hibs and Hearts continue to toil.
