Aberdeen welcome six players back from isolation as they return to training

Aberdeen welcomed six of their self-isolating stars back to Cormack Park.

The half-a-dozen first-team stars were able to return to training and or to continue their rehabilitation from injury.

Two further first-team players, who tested positive for COVID-19, are expected to be given the green light to also return to the Dons’ complex later this week.

Scott McKenna, Jonny Hayes, Dylan McGeouch, Matty Kennedy, Craig Bryson, Bruce Anderson, Mikey Devlin and Sam Cosgrove all had to quarantine after being in a city centre bar had become a hot spot for the coronavirus - which has led to a lockdown in Aberdeen city centre - after their opening match of the season against Rangers.

An Aberdeen spokeswoman confirmed: “We have strictly followed official guidance from public health and Scottish Government and the six players who had to self-isolate, and remained asymptomatic, were allowed to return to training today.

“The two players who tested positive will return to full training later this week once they have completed the Return to Train protocol.”

Aberdeen feared their first batch of players wouldn’t be able to train until tomorrow but it was 14 days from when they were last in contact with somebody with COVID-19.

All eight players have been fined several weeks’ wages and reprimanded by the club for breaching COVID-19 protocol.

They have also been charged by the Scottish Football Association with their case set to be heard later this month, while the club has also been charged by the Scottish Professional Football League.

All Aberdeen’s matches since have been cancelled but McInnes should now have more options available for Thursday’s re-arranged visit to St Johnstone.

Out of the six, however, some of those were already sidelined by injury.

McInnes already has selection issues as Curtis Main is also injured and Andrew Considine is suspended, although they will be boosted by the signing of new boy Ross McCrorie on-loan from Rangers.
