Aberdeen stun Atletico Madrid as they finish third in prestigious Euro youth tournament

Aberdeen fans are seeing the fruits of their youth system this season with Connor McLennan , Dean Campbell and Bruce Anderson all blasting onto the first team scene.

And there's appears to be plenty more stars of tomorrow in the making - if the 2005 team's performance at a prestigious European football festival this week is anything to go by.

The Dons' U14 side dumped Atletico Madrid 3-1 on the way to third place at the Iber Cup in Portugal - a result which particularly pleased coach Derek Young as it came 12 years after he was part of the side which lost to Atletico in the UEFA Cup.

Only the might of Benfica stopped Aberdeen grabbing a final spot against Juventus.

And Young, speaking after the Atletico victory, said: "It was a fantastic result and well deserved victory. I had a few demons to exercise with Atletico beating us 2-0 so it was good to get one over them here as a coach.

"It was a game we deserved to win, we made a lot of chances and Atletico weren't happy after the game, not shaking hands and the rest of it, but it's a proud day."

The Dons thumped Israel's Ironi Modiin 4-1 and local side GD Estoril Praia 5-0 to progress from the first round to the Super Group where they faced Atletico, Benfica and CD Cova da Piedade.

The stunning victory over Atletico saw Aberdeen give themselves a strong chance of reaching the final.

However the young Reds were edged out 2-0 by Benfica before winning their final match against CD Cova da Piedade 1-0 earlier today to grab third spot.
