Aberdeen side poised for Rangers test in cup clash - but it's not what you think

Aberdeen and Rangers go head-to-head this weekend and the Juniors has it's very own version of the famous clash - well, sort of.

Aberdonian outfit Bridge of Don Thistle make the long trip to Ayrshire on Saturday to take on Kilwinning Rangers in the second round of the Scottish Junior Cup.

The Ayrshire Gers - better known as The Buffs - are favourites to progress and boss Chris Strain is is keen to see his side win in style, despite vowing to treat the the visitors with total respect.

His side go into the clash on the back a 0-0 West Premiership draw against Beith.

North Super League strugglers Thistle, on the other hand,  lost 4-3 to Fraserburgh United in the Inter Regional Cup - then announced co-manager Thomas Wilson had quit due to work and family commitments.

Strain said: “We’re not going into the game in blazing form but there’s an expectation that we should win.

“We’ve had Bridge of Don watched. They’re a good, physical team and we’ll have to be at our best.

“It’s always all about making the next round but I’m looking for a performance that we can kick on from and take into the league.”

Strain has a full squad to pick from other than injured goalkeeper Adam Strain who is still a week or so away from a return to action.

Meanwhile, Irvine Vics boss Brian McLuckie is praying his young side can cut out the rookie errors for their home tie against Kello Rovers.

Individual mistakes cost the Westenders dear in a 4-0 league defeat at Renfrew on Saturday.

McLuckie said: “Kello are a good side. Hopefully we can rise to the occasion and cut out the silly mistakes.”
