Aberdeen school closes over virus case with contact tracing staff called in

An Aberdeen secondary has become the latest Scots school to reveal that a positive case of Covid-19 has been detected.

Staff at Oldmachar Academy, in Bridge of Don, confirmed the news on Thursday.

The school, in the north of the city will now be closed on Friday to allow for the building to undergo a deep clean.

It has not yet been confirmed if it is a pupil or staff member who has tested positive.

Parents of Oldmachar pupils have been made aware of the school closure.

Staff assured the community that there is no evidence that any transmission has taken place within the school.

Head teacher Judith Mohamed said: “I realise that this news will be unsettling.

"However, the decision to close is purely precautionary and we will continue to do all we can to support the health and wellbeing of our school community.

"The NHS’s Test and Protect contact tracers will be getting in touch with individual families tonight and tomorrow.

“I would want to reassure parents and carers that there is no evidence of transmission of Covid-19 at Oldmachar Academy and that the school has very good control measures in place.

“However, as a precaution and following consultation with NHS Grampian, we have taken the decision to close the building to pupils tomorrow to give cleaning services sufficient time to undertake a deep clean in keeping with national guidance.”

Pupils are expected to return to school as normal on Monday.

It comes as First Minister confirmed that Scotland would be staying in phase three of lockdown.

Aberdeen was placed back on lockdown after an outbreak in the city closed pubs, bars and restaurants a few weeks ago.

But in her regular briefing Sturgeon said gyms can reopen ahead of schedule as of August 31, with strict hygiene measures in place.

Contact team sports can resume outdoors as of August 24, and bingo halls will be able to reopen from the same date.

The First Minister confirmed there were 77 new  coronavirus  cases in Scotland in the past 24 hours.

This is the highest number of cases in 24 hours in almost three months.

Over 19,000 Scots have tested positive for Covid-19 and over 2,400 have died from the deadly bug.
