Aberdeen's surprise 'You'll Never Walk Alone' rendition that illuminated Jock Stein's epic Real Madrid 'myth' speech

For many, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is the ultimate football anthem that stirs something special deep within supporters.

The show tune turned football terrace anthem holds a special place in the hearts of fans of Liverpool, Celtic and Borussia Dortmund.

But a favourite among Aberdeen diehards?

Yes, it once was, the hit made famous by Gerry and the Pacemakers was once a favourite among the Dons faithful and was belted out at full voice before their historic 2-1 Cup Winners' Cup Final triumph over Real Madrid.

And the chant only added to the pre-match build-up in Gothenburg on a night when Scotland boss Jock Stein was providing incredible insight before kick-off.

The Celtic icon was a guest of close friend Sir Alex Ferguson for the trip with Stein part of the Dons camp in Sweden.

Speaking to Grampian TV before kick-off, he said: "I think the players will realise this is the most important game they've ever played in.

"I've been staying with them the last couple of days and the feeling, there's no one going about balling and shouting, and i more or less think there's a quiet confidence there.

"Within themselves there's a quiet confidence.

"I don't think it's in Aberdeen's nature to feel them out, I think they' be going after them early without exposing themselves at the back.

"I think they (Real Madrid) will be a little bit apprehensive because they lost the league championship and this is their road into Europe now.

"Aberdeen have been scoring goals recently and I don't think they'll be frightened of the match.

"I think Aberdeen will play at a pace that they are not accustomed to.

"I think Aberdeen are playing a myth tonight, something of 20 years ago, a few years ago Real Madrid vs Aberdeen there would only be one winner in it I think.

"But in that time, I think Aberdeen have improve tremendously while the other team has gone back a bit.

"Tonight will be the answer of who has caught up with who quickest and I would like to say that Aberdeen would be my selection."
