Aberdeen receive fresh Europa League boost as Sporting boss leaves his assistant in charge

Sporting Lisbon will be without their manager when they face Aberdeen in the Europa League on Thursday after he decided against attending the game.

As well as Ruben Amorim, three more of the coaching staff will miss the game against Derek McInnes' side, while they are also without nine players who tested positive for COVID-19.

Also included in that list of staff missing is their own Head of the Medical Department, Joao Pedro Araujo. Amorim was initially hoping to be able to get an exemption to watch the third qualifying round at his club's José Alvalade Stadium.

But he's now decided not to go anywhere near the stadium and will have to rely on assistant manager Emanuel Ferro to take charge of his side against Aberdeen.

Meanwhile, Sporting have been embroiled in a bizarre row over the renaming of their training centre.

Sporting have changed the name of their base to Academia Cristiano Ronaldo, in honour of their legendary former player.

However, that's infuriated Madeira-based club Nacional - Ronaldo's first club - who have had a training complex called the 'Cristiano Ronaldo Football Campus' since 2007.

They stated: "We were surprised, amazed and angry when we learned about this through the media.

"We registered this name 13 years ago and it's a fundamental theft of a trademark associated with this club and we disagree with Sporting in the strongest possible terms."
