Aberdeen player tests positive for coronavirus one day after city put in lockdown

Aberdeen have today been rocked by the news at least one of Derek McInnes’ first-team stars has tested positive for coronavirus.

It follows an outbreak of the virus in the north east of Scotland that saw Aberdeen thrust back into lockdown by Nicola Sturgeon on Wednesday.

A number of Dons stars had been in and around city centre hotspots earlier at the weekend causing concern they may have contracted the virus, reports The Daily Record.

Now the latest batch of results have confirmed at least one player has tested positive.

Should the number remain at just one or two then Saturday’s clash with  St Johnstone at McDiamid Park should get the go ahead.

But Aberdeen face a nervous wait to confirm the game will get the green light.

Premiership clubs must send their test results to SPFL chiefs 48 hours ahead of kick off meaning both clubs should know later today if the game will be played.

First Minister Sturgeon imposed strict new rules on the Granite City yesterday, including a five-mile travel restriction, following an outbreak of the virus linked to a number of bars.

Lockdown restrictions were imposed in the city on Wednesday after the number of cases in the cluster rose to 54.

Sturgeon said an additional 25 cases had been confirmed since then.

An Aberdeen player tested positive last month before the top flight resumed and is the only player to have returned a positive test since training resumed.

St Mirren’s coaching staff returned seven positive tests a fortnight ago - throwing their preparations into disarray - only for six of those to subsequently be found to be false postives.
