Aberdeen player ratings as Dom Ball is the villain in miserable semi-final defeat

It was a dismal day for Aberdeen as they crashed out of the William Hill Scottish Cup after a heavy defeat to Celtic.

Derek McInnes ' side struggled up against a dominant Hoops side and their job was made harder by red cards to Dom Ball and Lewis Ferguson.

Aberdeen were down to 10 men after 36 minutes when Ball was shown a second yellow and nine in the second half after a poor tackle by Ferguson.

There was no chance of stopping James Forrest's opening goal but the second came after an error from Mikey Devlin while the third came from the free kick which saw Ferguson sent off.

And here's how the Aberdeen players rated on a poor day.

Joe Lewis: Good save denied Simunovic the opener inside five minutes but helpless to stop a sizzling strike for the opener. 7

Dominic Ball: Huge ask to fill in at right back went horribly wrong. Already booked struggling to contain Celtic’s runners when he recklessly went into an aerial challenge with Christie that deserved his second yellow. 2

Scott McKenna: Dons’ best defender kept Edouard quiet for most of the match and couldn’t be faulted for the goals conceded. 7

Andrew Considine: Vital block on Forrest in first minute but lucky when his tug earned the Celt a yellow for diving. Booked. 6

Max Lowe: Vital clearance in his six yard box kept Dons in it after the break but found Forrest hot to handle. Booked. 5

Greg Stewart: Looked Aberdeen’s most creative force in spells but drifted out of the game and replaced. 6

Dean Campbell: Big boots to fill stepping into captain Graeme Shinnie’s midfield role and it proved too big a challenge for the youngster. 5

Lewis Ferguson: Killed his side’s fading hopes with a deserved straight red for a shocking two-footed lunge on Rogic. 4

Connor McLennan: Not nearly seen enough as Dons failed to trouble Celtic on his flank all day. 5

Stevie May: Made little impact until sacrificed for a defender following Ball’s dismissal. 2

Sam Cosgrove: Couldn’t connect sweetly with volley in first half. Physical presence couldn’t unsettle Hoops defence. 5

Subs:

Michael Devlin (May 43): On to stiffen Dons’ resolve after red card but instead gifted the penalty that killed them. 2.

Stephen Gleeson (Stewart 69): Game was gone already before his introduction. 2

James Wilson (Cosgrove 85): Late cameo. 1
