Stonehaven train driver hailed as 'one in a million' by Aberdeen locals

Tributes are pouring in for a 'one in a million' train driver who died in the Stonehaven railway tragedy.

We told how Brett McCullough died alongside the train’s conductor, Donald Dinnie, and a passenger on Wednesday as the 6.38am Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street ScotRail service crashed.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Stonehaven at about 9.40am.

As well as the three people killed, six others were taken to hospital.

Heartbroken loved ones took to social media to pay tribute to the 'amazing' dad and train driver who leaves wife Stephanie and three children, two girls and a boy.

One colleague wrote: "So sad. Brett used to give us a blast as we worked on the lines last year."

Another loved one posted: "RIP, Brett.

"You were such an amazing guy and friend.

"Thoughts are with the family God bless you all."

A third added: "I’m absolutely devastated.

"You're one in a million and one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met."

"Just so tragic, poor Brett went to work never imagining he'd not see his family again. Just so unfair. Deepest condolences to all affected," said another comment.

ScotRail's managing director, Alex Hynes, confirmed the tragic deaths on BBC's Good Morning Scotland radio programme.

He said: "Yesterday was a devastating day for everybody who works in the rail industry in Scotland.

"Our love and support is sent to the victims of this accident and their families, those that were injured in the accident and anybody who was touched by yesterday's terrible tragedy."

British Transport Police  chief inspector Brian McAleese said an investigation would be directed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS).

He added they "will also be working closely with them along with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and Office of Road and Rail to establish the full circumstances of how this train came to derail".
