Aberdeen discover Europa League opponents as Runavik hammering sends first round message

Aberdeen will face NSI Runavik of the Faroe Islands in the Europa League first qualifying round.

Runavik were runaway winners against Welsh Premier League side Barry Town in a 5-1 preliminary round victory - with striker Klaemint Olsen grabbing a hat-trick - on Thursday night to set up next week's clash.

Subject to travelling hiccups brought on by Covid-19, the match will be a one-off home tie at Pittodrie on August 27 - and will be behind closed doors, the same as all qualifiers in Europe's second-tier competition as mandated by UEFA.

The Dons' last European campaign ended in the third round after a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Croatian side Rijeka.

Prior to that tie they defeated Finnish side RoPS Rovaniemi and Chikhura Sachkhere of Georgia.

And boss Derek McInnes will be keen to avoid an embarrassing slip-up early on this season.

The latter stages of qualifying, particularly the third round, tends to be where the Reds run into difficulty.

Heartbreaking exits to the likes of Real Sociedad, Maribor and Burnley have haunted fans in the Granite City and that elusive group stage remains the ultimate goal in Europe.
