Aberdeen 'could abandon' Kingsford Stadium plans as council pushes for city centre alternative

Aberdeen could abandon their plan to build a long-awaited new stadium in Kingsford as it's claimed they're in talks with the local council over an alternative.

The Dons have been looking to leave Pittodrie for years and were granted planning permission for a new stadium on the outskirts of the city.

A training ground, Cormack Park, has already opened with state of the art facilities available to Derek McInnes and his squad.

A new stadium is planned to follow but has been put on pause due to the impact of the coronavirus crisis on Aberdeen's finances.

And the Evening Express claims that the plan could be abandoned altogether in favour of a location closer to the city centre.

The newspaper report initial talks have taken place with the council over building a new ground close to Pittodrie as part of a wider scheme to regenerate the area around Aberdeen Beach.

The recently closed Hilton hotel has been identified as the best site, with further talks planned in an effort to convince Dave Cormack and the Dons board.

Councillor Marie Boulton said: “The area around Pittodrie is the club’s natural and spiritual home. We are used to seeing generations of the same families walking through the city centre to get to the game and we don’t want those to become mere memories.

“We really hope there can be a way forward with this because the club remaining in town would help save the city centre.

“It is early days but there is a real willingness on our part to work with Aberdeen Football Club to find a way that works for everyone.”
