Aberdeen bound Declan Gallagher unused sub in final Motherwell game

Declan Gallagher was unable to get a final run out as Motherwell captain this afternoon, with the Aberdeen-bound defender not featuring in the Steelmen's 2-1 defeat to Ross County.

The 30-year-old will move to the Pittodrie club at the end of next month when his contract expires and the Fir Park faithful were denied the chance of seeing their skipper turn out one last time in claret and amber.

Gallagher was named on the bench for the County clash, but was an unused substitute for Graham Alexander's side.

Earlier this week, Alexander hit out at the Dons over their handling of Gallagher's signing announcement, believing the Dons should have waited until the end of the season to make the reveal.

And that was something Aberdeen boss Stephen Glass suggested was hypocritical given Gallagher's pre-contract signing from Livingston to Motherwell was also announced before the end of the 2019 season.

He hasn't featured for the club in over a fortnight but it is not expected to effect his selection for Scotland's Euro 2020 squad.

National boss Steve Clarke will announce a preliminary squad for the Championships on Wednesday and both Gallagher and current team-mate Stephen O'Donnell, who captained the Steelmen today, are expected to be among those getting the nod.

In the end, Gallagher's final outing as a Motherwell player came on May 1 in a 2-0 win at home to Kilmarnock.

Meanwhile, injury denied Allan Campbell of a proper farewell as he failed to make the squad ahead of his impending exit, with a number of clubs chasing the midfielder.
