Aberdeen ace Lewis Ferguson could emulate Rangers hero and uncle Barry 20 years on

Aberdeen star Lewis Ferguson is in line to cap a stunning debut season at Pittodrie by emulating his uncle Barry.

The 19-year-old is one of a strong list of candidates for the Premiership Young Player of the Year award.

And should the Dons ace scoop top prize then he will come exactly 20 years after his uncle did likewise after blasting onto the scene at Rangers.

Barry Ferguson lifted the PFA Scotland young player gong in 1998/99 after making 40 appearances for the Ibrox club as they scooped a domestic treble.

Now, two decades on, Red Army hero Ferguson currently leads a Record Sport Online poll asking readers for their choice of the best young player in the top flight this season.

He's ahead of three-times winner Kieran Tierney as well as Ross McCrorie, Kris Ajer, Greg Taylor, David Turnbull, Jake Hastie and Ryan Porteous.

An acrobatic equaliser in the Europa League tie at Burnley announced Ferguson's arrival but it was the headed winner against Rangers in the Betfred Cup semi final at Hampden that really propelled him into the Red Army's hearts.

Derek McInnes rewarded the Scotland Under 21 star with a new contract last month tying him down to the Pittodrie club until 2024.

The boss said at the time: "There's a maturity about Lewis and there was a feeling quietly that once he got into the team, he'd be difficult to leave out."

The former Hamilton star is from footballing stock with dad Derek also having starred for Rangers in the 1980s. Ferguson jnr has established himself as a key member of the engine room in a stellar season.
