Aberdeen 2 Motherwell 3: Steven Hammell era starts with win as Kevin van Veen haunts Dons again

Steven Hammell's rein as Motherwell manager kicked off with a thrilling comeback win to sink Aberdeen 3-2.

Kevin van Veen netted for the FIFTH time in five games against the Dons as the Dutchman haunted the Pittodrie men once again with a second half winner.

Hammell was officially appointed on Thursday and he and assistant Brian Kerr have now steered the Steelmen to two wins in their opening three Premiership fixtures.

Hammell made two changes from their dramatic late defeat to St Johnstone last week, with Barry Maguire and Josh Morris replaced in the centre of midfield by Dean Cornelius and Callum Slattery.

And it was the Steelmen who struck first. Twenty minutes in Connor Shields' tantalising ball across goal found Blair Spittal and the former Ross County man fired home his first goal in Motherwell colours.

However, just three minutes before the break the Dons pulled level when Bojan Miovski headed home from Liam Scales cross.

And the visitors had a nightmare start to the second half when they failed to clear a cross and Jonny Hayes hammered the ball into the to turn the game around.

It would have been easy for 'Well to crumble after that, but within five minutes Callum Slattery made it 2-2 when he poked the ball past Kelle Roos from a Sean Goss corner.

The topsy-turvy tussle continued and three minutes later Motherwell found themselves back in front when van Veen reacted quickest to head the ball home after Spittal's shot had come back off the crossbar.

Van Veen had a great chance to seal it going into the final ten minutes, but Roos denied him before Ross Tierney struck the rebound wide of the target.

Motherwell are back at home next Saturday when they host Livingston.
