Aberdare stabbing incident: Everything we know so far

A total of five people have been now arrested after police were called to reports of a stabbing in Aberdare on Saturday.

Police were called to Whitcombe Street at around 8.25pm on Saturday, June 12 after reports of a stabbing. The incident is thought to have taken place near the Post Office on Dean Street and Whitcombe Street.

On Sunday, police confirmed a total of five people have been arrested.

Two men, both 23, who were taken to hospital have been released and both have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. A third 23-year-old man is still in hospital, however his condition is now not believed to be life-threatening. He has also been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

Immediately following the incident on Saturday, a 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Another 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and GBH.

The ambulance service and air ambulance also attended.

The ambulance service said one ambulance and two rapid response vehicles were deployed after being called at 8.29pm. One person was treated at the scene. Three people, all aged 23, were rushed to hospital. Their condition is unknown, however, one is believed to have life threatening injuries.

An eyewitness also said armed police were in attendance at the incident. Officers remained at the scene until Sunday, when a cordon including a taxi remained in place.

Detective Inspector Emma Hampton said on Saturday night: “Our officers will be working beyond this evening and into the early hours to try and ascertain further detail about this incident, however we have already made two arrests.

“We will be making extensive enquiries and I would urge members of the public to get in touch with us to provide their accounts of what they saw this evening. If you have any video footage of the incident then we would like you to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information is asked to get in contact with South Wales Police by one of the following means quoting reference number 2100206078.

On Sunday, Detective Inspector Matt Hicks said: “What happened last night will understandably cause the community concerns but five men involved have all been arrested.

“Our officers remain at the scene and I would urge anyone who has information to approach our officers and pass on anything that may help our investigation.”

Rhondda Cynon Taf council leader Andrew Morgan told people to avoid the area for the "next few hours" via a tweet.

He said: "Been made aware of an ongoing incident in #Aberdare near the town centre where there is a large presence from emergency services. Please avoid the area if you can for the next few hours."

On Sunday morning he said it was "Very disturbing for this to happen in Aberdare last night. Will be discussing with the police later today."
