Prime Minister Shinzo Abe welcomed Friday's summit talks between South Korean President Moon Jae In and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, expressing strong hope for the resolution of Pyongyang's nuclear and missile issues as well as the issue of Japanese abductees.
"We welcome [the inter-Korea summit] as a positive move toward a comprehensive resolution of pending North Korean issues," Abe told reporters Friday night.
He added that Japan "strongly expects North Korea will take concrete actions" to this end.
The prime minister said he will hear from Moon later via telephone about what the two leaders discussed in Friday's talks. "We'll closely cooperate with the United States and South Korea in resolving North Korea's nuclear and missile issues and the abduction of Japanese nationals, as well as over the U.S.-North Korean summit talks."
Referring to the joint declaration by Moon and Kim, Abe said the Japanese government will compare it with past statements issued by the two countries and analyze it before deciding how Japan will respond.
