WASHINGTON -- Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump will meet for direct talks on the sidelines of a U.N. General Assembly meeting to be held in New York in September, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Wednesday at a regular press conference.
She said the two leaders confirmed the talks during a telephone conference on Wednesday morning.
Winning a third consecutive term in the upcoming ruling Liberal Democratic Party presidential election on Sept. 20 will be a prerequisite for Abe to make his trip to the United States in September.
During his talks with Trump on the sidelines of the U.N. meeting, Abe is expected to confirm their cooperation in working toward the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and also seek cooperation for solving the issue of the abduction of Japanese nationals by North Korea.
