Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday sent a masakaki sacred wooden offering bearing the name "Prime Minister Shinzo Abe" at his own expense to Yasukuni Shrine in the Kudankita district of Tokyo as the shrine's autumn festival started on the day.
The prime minister does not plan to visit Yasukuni Shrine during the festival, which will last until Saturday.
House of Representatives Speaker Tadamori Oshima and House of Councillors President Chuichi Date also made offerings of masakaki to the shrine on Wednesday, along with Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Takumi Nemoto.
