
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sought understanding for his decision to call for school closures as a measure against the new coronavirus during a press conference at the Prime Minister's Office on Saturday.
Regarding his request for closing educational institutions including elementary, junior high and high schools in a bid to contain the virus outbreak, Abe described the decision to do so a painful one. However, he asked for public understanding by saying, "We have to prepare for infection-related risks by prioritizing children's health and safety."
Abe said the government will compile additional emergency measures for tackling the virus problem within about 10 days.
