Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Sunday that U.S. biotech company Moderna, Inc., is making progress in the development of a coronavirus vaccine.
"I have information that the vaccination will probably be available between December and the first half of next year," Abe said about the Cambridge,Mass.-based firm during an Internet show.
Abe also brought up British drug maker AstraZeneca PLC, saying, "We are negotiating to secure [vaccines from both companies] as soon as it is completed."
Abe also warned the nation against letting down its guard as summer approaches, noting the spreading infection rate in the Middle East where temperatures are high. "You can't think you're safe just because it's summer," he said.
Abe added that the government will provide support for medical institutions and strengthen PCR testing in preparation for a possible second wave of the virus.
