Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited a hospital again on Monday, which marked his 2,799th straight day in office, making him Japan's longest-serving prime minister.

Abe, amid mounting concerns over his health, broke the record held by former Prime Minister Eisaku Sato.

After leaving his private residence in Tokyo at 9:45 a.m., Abe entered Keio University Hospital in Tokyo that morning.

"The prime minister was told during the consultation last week by his doctor to come back in a week. Today's visit is a follow-up to the previous one," a secretary to the prime minister told reporters.

Abe visited the hospital on Aug. 17 and stayed there for about 7-1/2 hours for a "non-overnight checkup."

In September 2007, Abe resigned from his post in his first administration due to worsened symptoms of his chronic disease -- ulcerative colitis. Now that he has visited the hospital two weeks in a row, concerns over his health remain smoldering within the government and the ruling bloc.

Abe rested over the weekend, staying at his private residence on Saturday and only going out to have his hair cut on Sunday.
