Abe: Japan supports resolve against chemical weapons

Japan supports the resolve of the United States, Britain and France against the use of chemical weapons, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Saturday afternoon following the coordinated military strikes by those three nations against the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"The use of chemical weapons is extremely inhuman and we can never allow it" to happen, Abe told reporters during his visit to Osaka. "The Japanese government supports the resolve of the United States, Britain and France [to show that] the proliferation and use of chemical weapons is absolutely unacceptable.

"We see the latest action [by the three countries] as a measure to prevent a further deterioration of the state of affairs" in Syria, the prime minister added.

Abe was to return to Tokyo on Saturday evening to convene a meeting of the National Security Council and discuss how Tokyo will respond to the latest situation.
