Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed his determination about Japan's future in 2019, according to his New Year's statement on Tuesday.
Referring to the Imperial succession, with the Crown Prince's enthronement to occur on May 1, Abe called 2019 "a year when Japan will pave the way toward the new era following Heisei."
Abe recognized that the low birthrate and an aging society are some of the most serious problems, and emphasized that the "social security system should be drastically changed to build a system for all generations" by implementing such measures as the program planned from October, in which kindergartens and nurseries will be free.
Regarding the Group of 20 summit meeting, which will be held in June in Osaka, Abe predicted that "2019 will be the year when Japan will shine in the world's stage."
