Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will hold telephone talks with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach on Tuesday night to discuss the possibility of postponing the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics scheduled for this summer, according to several sources close to the matter.
Calls for a "postponement of one year" have been heard within the Japanese government, and the focus of discussion is likely to be on how to adjust the schedule, including the length of the postponement.
Yoshiro Mori, president of the organizing committee of the Tokyo Games, and Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike will be in on the telephone talks.
In light of the global spread of the new coronavirus, the IOC decided to consider postponing the Tokyo Olympics at an emergency teleconference on Sunday. Bach sent a letter to athletes explaining, "A decision about a postponement today could not determine a new date for the Olympic Games ..."
The IOC hopes to reach a conclusion on whether to postpone the Games within four weeks.
