Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, at a Wednesday meeting of a coronavirus task force at the Prime Minister's Office, revealed a plan to call for the cancellation, postponement or downsizing national-level sporting and cultural events where many people would gather for the next two weeks.
Abe also announced that the government would deny entry to foreigners who have stayed in two parts of South Korea -- Daegu and Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province -- within the past two weeks. This will be the first expansion of the scope of foreign nationals denied entry to include those who have been to countries other than China.
Regarding the spread of the coronavirus in South Korea, the Japanese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday released information on the risk of infection in the two areas, calling for voluntary restraint on unnecessary and nonurgent travel there. It is the third highest among four alert levels.
The government has already refused entry of foreigners from Hubei and Zhejiang provinces in China, where coronavirus infections are widespread, specifying those who have stayed there in the past two weeks or hold passports issued by the two provinces.
