The Cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe resigned en masse at an extraordinary Cabinet meeting on Wednesday morning.
Abe ended up holding the prime minister post for 2,822 consecutive days after his second Cabinet was formed in December 2012, or a total of 3,188 days if his first Cabinet is included. Either way, both are records for a prime minister.
"Since regaining power, I have made an all-out effort day after day. I am proud of having taken up the challenges of various problems together with the citizens," Abe told reporters in front of the Prime Minister's Office ahead of Cabinet resignation.
At the extraordinary Cabinet meeting, the prime minister's statement on the Cabinet resignation was approved. In the statement, he brought up the Cabinet's achievements that included adoption of free education bills, enactment of security-related laws that allows the country to exercise the right to collective self-defense in a limited manner, and the implementation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
In November last year, Abe surpassed Taro Katsura's record of 2,886 total days as prime minister, and last month, became the longest continuously serving prime minister by breaking the record set by Eisaku Sato at 2,798 straight days.
