Abdoulaye Doucoure, Lucas Digne and Everton's most underrated performers

Abdoulaye Doucoure

Adam Jones: This is always a tough question to answer and there are a number of players who can really fill that role for Everton.

Since his arrival Abdoulaye Doucoure has perhaps not got the same attention as Allan and James Rodriguez have, but his performances have played a huge role in changing Everton's midfield setup.

The Blues have lacked a real box-to-box player such as him for so long, and his positional intelligence for much of the time he has been on the pitch is particularly impressive.

Elsewhere, Anthony Gordon could well have a shout for this - even though he's not really getting his opportunity in the Premier League so far this season.

The young winger was impressive when introduced on a regular basis towards the end of last season following the return from lockdown, having coped well with the pressure of his first league start coming against Liverpool.

His League Cup performances this season have been top quality, admittedly against lower league opponents, which begs the question of when he will get the opportunity from the start in the Premier League again.

Lucas Digne

Chris Beesley: I'm not too sure that anyone is particularly underrated in the Everton team but for sheer consistency I'd probably say Lucas Digne.

Considering that Leighton Baines was the club's best left-back of the Premier League era and that left-back is often the most difficult position on the pitch to find a quality recruit in, the French international has taken on the role seamlessly since displacing the modern day Goodison icon.

His compatriot the rookie Niels Nkounkou produced some promising displays against lower division sides in the early rounds of the Carabao Cup but it was a different case when Digne was suspended for the trip to Newcastle United and the former Marseille youngster made his Premier League debut.

Digne's presence was certainly missed on that occasion. Not only is he defensively solid but he provides a supply line of crosses to Dominic Calvert-Lewin who might be another candidate for being underrated.

The striker has understandably been receiving plenty of plaudits for his prolific form so far this season but you should underestimate just how much he's progressed over the past year or so.

Michael Keane

Connor O'Neill: Before the previous international break, there would have been a whole host of names you could have picked given how well the Blues had performed in their opening seven games of the season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the obvious choice given the amount of goals he has scored so far this season.

But given he has earned plenty of plaudits and recognition for his impressive performances and the goals he has scored, it feels it would be the easy option to pick him.

One man who has continued to impress me this season is Michael Keane. Granted Saturday’s defensive display was far from vintage, and the previous two games weren’t much better, he still has quietly gone about his business in an impressive manner so far this season.

When you take into consideration that he has also been playing in front of a goalkeeper who has struggled for parts of the campaign and been prone to making mistakes, it makes his composed displays even more impressive.

Add to that his assist for Calvert-Lewin’s opener against West Ham in the Carabao Cup, and the three goals he has to his name, he really has been an impressive performer for the Blues so far this season.
