On Tuesday night it was ABC's turn to shine in the cut-throat US autumn ratings battle, with a little help from the debut of Thelma & Louise star Geena Davis's new sitcom.
The star vehicle, imaginatively titled the Geena Davis Show and featuring Ms Davis as a glamorous career woman who falls for Thirtysomething actor Peter Horton's divorced single dad, won its 9.30pm slot and averaged a 12.9 rating/19 share.
New ABC medical drama Gideon's Crossing, which reunites Homicide creator Paul Attanasio and star Andre Braugher, also opened strongly at 10pm, with 11.8/19.
James Cameron's futuristic drama Dark Angel followed up its stellar launch last week with a promising second episode on Tuesday night, averaging 8.7/13 from 9-10pm on Fox.
CBS drama Judging Amy also returned strongly for its second season, winning the 10pm slot with 12.3/20.
Tuesday night reinforced the new season trend of the US networks' traditional fare of drama and sitcom making a comeback in the ratings, after a year when reality shows, led by Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and Survivor, have dominated.
