ABC refuses to show Carol ad featuring lesbian love scene

Critically adored … Carol
‘Making adjustments’ … Carol

Distributors the Weinstein Company, whose movie Carol is their major stake in this year’s Oscars race, are said to be considering “making adjustments to fit network TV execs’ requests” in response to a rejection of their latest promo for the film.

ABC, whose parent company is Disney, have requested that TWC “provides more coverage on” Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in the advert, which features non-explicit nudity and the suggestion of sexual intercourse.

The advert was due to screen in the run up to the Oscars and while Academy members are considering how to place their final votes. Although the film is up for six awards, its snub in the best picture and best director categories surprised many. Many smaller awards bodies, such as the New York Film Critics Circle, have given the film their top prize. The film leads the pack at the Independent Spirit awards, which take place the day before the Oscars.

Though critically adored, the film has also failed to set the box office alight as comprehensively as many had hoped. Its current global total is $24.5m, with a UK contribution of $3.7m.
