ABC News’ Nate Byrne Responds To ‘Disappointed Viewer’ Who Slammed His New Haircut

Someone who woke up on the wrong side of bed thought it necessary to critique the haircut of ABC News Breakfast’s Nate Byrne, the beloved weatherman has revealed.

Byrne — who has presented the weather segment on the morning show since 2017 — took to Facebook on Wednesday to share a letter he received from a “disappointed viewer” after he debuted a schmick new cut earlier in the month.

Fittingly headlined “Haircut”, the letter reads less like an angry troll and more like someone genuinely disheartened by Byrne’s fresh look.

“Whilst I respect your right to have your hair styled as you wish, I am exercising my right to tell you that it looks juvenile and awful,” the fan wrote.

“I’ll return to ABC Breakfast once it grows out.”

While the viewer was confident enough to sign it off with their name, Byrne blurred out the signature, meaning we cannot discover whether they have a TV-ready haircut themselves.

They did use “Sincerely”, so there’s at least some points for politeness.

Taking the ‘constructive’ criticism in his stride, Byrne said the fan mail is “proof that the art of letter-writing is not dead!”

He also asked for “suggestions for my next ‘do”, but between his new locks, limitless supply of paisley shirts and skin-tight pants, we think he shouldn’t change a thing!

Fans flocked to Byrne’s comments to share their support, sarcastically quipping that his “ability to give us weather updates is severely impacted by [his] hairstyle”, or reminding him that, in the words of Dolly Parton, “the higher the hair, the closer to god”.

While Byrne likely won’t be taking pointers from someone with enough time to type, spellcheck, and mail a letter about his hair (and so early in the morning!), it’s not the first time he’s responded to viewer criticism.

In 2022, Byrne hit back at homophobic comments he received after participating in ABC’s Mardi Gras float, describing it as an “unprovoked spray of hatred”.

But for every loser with too much time, there are plenty more fans, with Byrne receiving an outpouring of support last year after he suffered a panic attack while presenting a weather segment.

We sit firmly in the supportive camp, because even if Byrne rocked up with a mullet, a bowl cut, or a bald cap, he can really do no wrong.
