Abbey Vale sign Steven Couper and Craig McKeand after pair leave Threave Rovers

Abbey Vale have brought Steven Couper back to the club for the new season.

The midfielder and Craig McKeand have moved to Maryfield Park after leaving Threave Rovers, with defender Jordan Muirhead also joining the club from Lochmaben.

Vale co-manager Allan Clark said: “We had Steven before and we didn’t want to lose him. We’re delighted to have him back. He’s probably not played as much as he’d have liked over the last few years but, in my view, on his day he’s as good as any midfielder in the league.

“Craig is another who probably hasn’t played as much as he’d like but he’ll add competition to Hayden Edgar and Adam Kirk at the back, which is what we need as Jack Connelly has effectively retired after getting a bad injury at the end of last season.

“Jordan is a player myself and Frazer have admired for a while, right back to when he was at the Crichton. He’ll give us a bit more balance as he is naturally left footed.”

Almost as important as the new signings are the player who are staying on from last season, with 14 members of the squad signing on for another year.

And that includes star striker Tommy Goss, who scored 40 goals last season.

Clark added: “We had a few clubs inquiring about Tommy but he told them all that he would be re-signing for Abbey Vale, which is fantastic.

“We have signed up the core of last season’s squad. We’ve lost Andy Gilston and Murray Campbell but aside from that it’s just the Queen of the South boys we had on loan who have left and, hopefully, we can work out a deal with them.”

Vale have arranged friendlies against the Hole in the Wa, Queen of the South’s under-20s, Kello Rovers, Hawick Royal Albert and Larkhall Thistle ahead of the new season.
