Abbey Clancy admits she hated performing on Strictly Come Dancing even though she won

Abbey Clancy was so terrified of performing live on Strictly Come Dancing she’d have “rather died” and “hated” the tour.

Despite many contestants gushing of the buzz of hitting the ballroom dancefloor, it was the reluctant model – married to footballer Peter Crouch – who was crowned winner of the 2013 series with her partner Aljaz Skorjanec.

“I loved practising in the rehearsal room, and then when I had to do the live show, I would have rather died,” she admits. “We did a tour in all the arenas and I hated it. I hated the crowd cheering me.”

Former England ace Peter, pictured, encouraged her to let the roar of the crowd spur her on and boost her adrenaline.

“It just didn’t work,” she says.

The model, 35, even received a pep talk from Stevie Wonder about her fear of the stage back in 2008. She said: “I was on Jonathan Ross and I was sitting next to Stevie, sitting in silence and he said to me, ‘Why are you so scared?’ He could just feel the energy coming off me.”

Though Peter would argue she isn’t timid... Abbey tells Frazer T Smith’s podcast 12 Questions that she tried to get him to take her surname when the pair wed in 2011, as she prefers it.

He respectfully declined, but adds: “She wears the trousers, so I might as well.”
