A reliable Palestinian source said that President Mahmoud Abbas will send a final warning to the world in his speech on Sep. 27 at the UN to either save the two-state solution or suffer from the consequences of its collapse.
Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee member Ahmed Majdalani said that Abbas’ speech at the UN will focus mainly on the peace process and the role of the United States in it.
Majdalani added that Abbas will reaffirm his commitment to the decisions of the National and Central Councils, which include ending the transitional period and the suspension of recognition of Israel until it recognizes the Palestinian state. Also, the speech will highlight determining the relationship with the occupation during the transitional stage.
Last February, Abbas addressed the Security Council and called for holding an international conference to re-launch the peace process. His vision focuses on a conference that results in forming an international mechanism to sponsor negotiations within a specific timeline and reference.
American-Palestinian ties worsened after US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and made cuts on funds allocated to Palestinians, before shutting down the PLO office and dismissing the ambassador and his family.
Abbas called on foreign ministers and diplomats in the Security Council to attend a meeting in New York next week to discuss peace possibilities in the region, reported Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour.
Abbas will meet with the group of 30 ministers and diplomats, including the heads of UN committees that deal with Palestinian issues, on Sept. 26, a day before his scheduled speech at the General Assembly.
Mansour did not provide details, but he told reporters that there had been a “radical shift” under the Trump administration on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
