Abba star Benny Andersson's Maserati which was used to help record hit songs goes up for sale

An Italian sports car once owned by Abba’s Benny Andersson – who used its cassette player to record new songs – is expected to fetch £120,000 at auction.

The Maserati Merak was bought new by the Swedish pop star in 1976, at the height of Abba’s fame.

The supercar was specially fitted with a cassette player and microphone that Benny used to make a note of his ideas while on the road.

The original Blaupunkt radio remains in place and still works, making the Maserati a must-have for any Abba fan.

Andersson, who was married to bandmate Anni-Frid Lyngstad between 1978 and 1981, sold the car several years ago but photos survive of the group beside it.

He bought the Maserati in the same year that the foursome released their fourth studio album – Arrival. It featured three of their biggest hits – Dancing Queen, Money, Money, Money and Knowing Me, Knowing You.

The pristine motor – which is now owned by private collector – will be auctioned tomorrow.
