A tot was found a 'locked in a dark room the size of a cell with just a bowl of water'

Police officers were called to a property after the abandoned child was discovered.

The child is understood to have been been taken to hospital, but was unhurt, reports the Manchester Evening News .

They are now in the care of Salford council's children's services.

According to witnesses, police stood guard at the property on Bolton Road, Salford for most of yesterday.

The property was taped off by officers.

Two people - a man and a woman - were arrested on suspicion of child neglect, Greater Manchester Police said.

They have been released under investigation.

A force statement read: " Police were called shortly after 10.40am on Thursday, October 3 following a report of an unaccompanied child at an address on Bolton Road.

"Officers attended and a man aged 32 and a woman aged 30 were arrested on suspicion of child neglect at the scene a short time later.

"They have been released under investigation.

"The child was uninjured and is in the care of children’s services.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
