Abandoned Edinburgh swimming pool to be converted into luxury housing

An abandoned Edinburgh swimming pool is to be converted into luxury housing.

Edinburgh council validated a proposal to to renovate the old private swimming pool and create the new luxury housing.

The swimming pool lies within a private residence and was created in the 1960s but has not been used in recent years.

The owners say due to lying derelict the building is starting to “degrade” and they want to take action and stop the rot.

Plans show they want to create a new open plan living space to replace the swimming pool.

The upmarket neighbourhood is largely residential, with a golf course sitting to the east.

A previous planning application to renovate the property was rejected by Edinburgh council because it would have an adverse effect on the local area.

However, the owners dispute this and say that as there will be no demolition it will not affect neighbouring properties.

On the planning application a spokesperson said: “The massing and design of the building is extremely polite within its context. As the building is existing, it cannot be argued that its conversion will adversely affect the character of the area.

“The privacy of the neighbouring properties is unaffected by the conversion of the building into a modern family home.

“The development is a sustainable solution for a new house. The structure and enclosing envelope can be retained and improved. This must reduce the carbon footprint of the new house.

“Avoiding demolition means that only limited materials would have to be removed from the site to landfill or for recycling.

“Reuse, and repurposing of materials means that this project does not exert pressure on the ever-decreasing resources of our planet the way a totally new building might.”

The City of Edinburgh Council are expected to make a decision in the coming days and weeks.
