Abandoned Edinburgh shop to be demolished to make way for new block of flats

An Edinburgh housing association has applied to build new flats available for social rent.

Port of Leith Housing Association and Cullross Ltd have applied to the City of Edinburgh Council for the new block of flats, containing one and two bedroom properties.

An existing retail store on the site at Telford Drive is to be demolished and the new flats will be erected alongside new landscaping works.

The former convenience store has been shut for eight years and there is no other grocery store in the area.

However, the developers say that locals have a Farmfoods, Waitrose, Marks and Spencers and Sainsbury’s within less than half a mile.

Cullross Ltd, will complete construction of the development and ownership will pass onto Port of Leith Housing Association, who will be responsible for the management of the eleven new apartments.

On the design statement the developers say the new building will be surrounded by existing local authority and housing association properties and has access to a nearby beauty spot, Telford Path.

It reads: “To the west of the site is the green space of Telford Path - a walking and cycle route through the west of the city, following the path of a disused railway line.

“The path is popular with cyclists, and an informal track onto the Path runs immediately to the south of the site.

“The path itself is bordered by trees and passes under a bridge just to the south of the site. The land surrounding it is covered in scrubby grass and heavy growth of shrubs and bushes. Crossing the path gives access to the Easter Drylaw area of Edinburgh.”

The City of Edinburgh Council validated the proposal on July 9 and a decision will be made in the coming weeks.
